Bratislava-based practice Compass Architekti has recently designed this family house in Jarovce, Slovakia, taking cues of just three requirements. The home needed to have a smaller footprint, no interior stairs, and plenty of space for nine grandchildren.
The dwelling stands on a small plot of land among other family houses. The L-shaped structure occupies the northern section of the parcel, while the green atrium and pool make the most of the south part’s exposure to sunlight.
The horizontal concrete roof slab is omnipresent and connects seamlessly all spaces in the house. The slab leans from the interior to the exterior and leads the narrative of your visit to the house from the very entry part to the most intimate parts of the house. The cantilevered part of the roof is set to regulate the solar radiation and interior climate according to the sun path.
At the intersection of two wings, the roof slab is filled with a large radius. This curve creates the much wider area of the terrace. It is the perfect spot for dining, the place that integrates the garden and the interior. And to be honest, it looks good in the pictures too.
The house is divided into two sections. One contains the social spaces, including a living room and dining room. It features large windows and sliding doors that allow the grandparents to easily supervise the children. The other houses the bedroom and a smaller lounge space. With direct access to a private garden, this area provides respite from the bustling atmosphere of the front atrium.
The design of the interior further develops the spatial concept of the house. Throughout the house, concrete and wood surfaces define the decor, which also features modern furniture.
