Revealed at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Week, the Outlier I yacht concept marks a seminal collaboration between the visionary architecture practice Foster + Partners and the renowned naval engineering firm Lateral. This 88-metre concept boldly challenges the conventions of megayacht design, proposing a new paradigm that seamlessly integrates groundbreaking naval engineering with a holistic and human-centric design approach. It stands as a testament to what is possible when architectural ambition and technical innovation converge on the high seas.
At first glance, the Outlier I presents a striking proposition. As explained by Senior Partner Marilu Sicoli of Foster + Partners, this 88-metre vessel incorporates features typically reserved for gigayachts exceeding 100 metres. Its most immediately impressive statistic is the provision of approximately 40 percent more deck space than standard yachts in its category. This achievement is not merely a quantitative gain but a qualitative leap, fundamentally altering the scope for outdoor living and entertainment, and setting a new benchmark for its class.

The radical redesign is made possible by a bold departure from traditional yacht layouts. In a move that redefines naval engineering, Lateral’s technical platform relocates the engine room towards the bow. This strategic shift liberates a vast volume of space in the middle and aft sections of the yacht, areas traditionally dominated by machinery. This newfound freedom allows the internal architecture to be fundamentally reinvented, creating opportunities for extraordinary volumetric experiences and bringing guest areas closer to the water’s edge for a more immersive connection with the sea.

This innovative core layout unlocks unprecedented potential for the guest experience. The design facilitates superior spatial connectivity, both vertically and horizontally, allowing for double or triple-height spaces that are flooded with natural light. Adam Newburn, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners, emphasises the concept’s ability to offer “greater interior flexibility” and “extremely generous living areas.” The result is a series of unobstructed exterior decks towards the aft, perfect for lounging, while the internal arrangements are reimagined to enhance interactions between guests and crew, ensuring both comfort and privacy.

Functioning within the highly desirable 2000 GT segment, the Outlier I occupies what the team identifies as a ‘sweet spot’ in the megayacht market. This ideal size allows for ease of mooring while still integrating key amenities such as a swimming pool, a helipad, and a secluded private top deck. Further enhancing its practicality is a dedicated tank deck service spine running the vessel’s full length and a larger tender bay capable of accommodating a wider range of tenders and toys.
Building upon Foster + Partners’ esteemed heritage in nautical design, the Outlier I is conceived not as a fixed blueprint but as a flexible platform for owner-driven customisation. Whether envisioned as a private retreat for secluded getaways or a vibrant hub for social gatherings, the concept supports a wide range of uses. This luxury yacht is engineered for both serene cruising and adventurous exploration, demonstrating that groundbreaking design can open up new possibilities for living on the water, from the world’s most glamorous ports to its most unspoiled locations.
