A Curved Chestnut Core Defines Spatial Harmony in Bilbao’s Verne Heros House

Curved chestnut wood core anchors kitchen in Verne Heros House Bilbao refurbishment, spatial efficiency & natural light.

Pablo García Esparza

In the vibrant heart of Bilbao, Spain, architecture studio Verne has masterfully reimagined a residential space with the Verne Heros House—a testament to spatial efficiency and tactile warmth. This complete refurbishment on Heros Street revolves around a striking curved chestnut wood volume that acts as both functional anchor and sculptural centerpiece.

The kitchen anchored to the curved chestnut wood volume frames views into the fluid living area, embodying spatial efficiency and openness.

Strategically positioned at the apartment’s core, the sinuous chestnut wood structure houses two fully equipped bathrooms while orchestrating the home’s entire layout. Flanking this organic nucleus, the kitchen anchors one side while a spacious walk-in wardrobe occupies the other. This configuration eliminates corridors entirely, maximizing utility through intelligent zoning.

From the dining zone, the bedroom is subtly defined by an acoustic curtain, ensuring privacy while maintaining visual continuity and luminosity.

Circulation flows intuitively around the wooden form, fostering a seamless sense of movement. The curved geometry ensures openness and luminosity throughout the compact footprint, with sightlines unobstructed by traditional partitions.

The minimalist kitchen island integrates seamlessly with the curved chestnut core, showcasing tactile warmth and functional elegance within the Bilbao residence.

Natural light floods the interior from dawn, amplifying the honeyed tones of the wood and enhancing the home’s serene atmosphere. Privacy is elegantly addressed in the bedroom, where an acoustic curtain  replaces rigid walls. This subtle boundary maintains visual continuity while softly delineating the resting area—prioritizing fluidity without sacrificing intimacy.

Natural light floods the living room, enhanced by the reflective surfaces and open circulation around the central chestnut wood volume.

Verne’s intervention transforms the residence into a study in discreet order. Every element serves multiple purposes: the central volume conceals plumbing, defines zones, and guides movement; the curtain absorbs sound while preserving airiness; and the restrained material palette of wood, glass, and stone unifies the home. The result is a space where function and form coexist peacefully, inviting inhabitants into a serene relationship with their surroundings.

A glimpse into the bathroom through the curved chestnut core’s doorway highlights the volume’s role in concealing services while framing discreet order.

This Bilbao project exemplifies how intelligent spatial choreography can turn constraints into virtues, proving that even within historic urban fabric, modern design can cultivate tranquility through light and material honesty. For Verne, the Heros House isn’t just a renovation—it’s a manifesto for living lightly and luminously.
