Plus One Architects have completely transformed the top-floor apartment of a century-old building in Prague, Czech Republic. With its high ceilings and mullioned windows, the original charm of the space was undeniable. However, the layout was not suitable for modern living.

The owners had a vision of creating an open and spacious living area where they could comfortably gather, while also incorporating smaller private corners for each member of the household. It was no easy task, but after an extensive search for the perfect layout, Plus One Architects finally arrived at a version that pleased both the owners and themselves.

Throughout the redesign process, the architects made significant changes to the original layout. Only the load-bearing walls remained untouched, as even they required some modifications. From the moment you step inside, the living space seamlessly flows throughout the entire apartment. It can easily be expanded and extended to include a bedroom or office, providing flexibility for the owners’ needs. To ensure privacy, the bedroom/office is enclosed on two sides, with curtains surrounding the perimeter. This clever design element allows for intimacy while still maintaining an open and airy feel.

The other half of the apartment is dedicated to the children’s room and bathroom. Although the floor space of the children’s room may not be overly generous, the architects found a creative solution. They incorporated a sleeping floor hidden above the closet, compensating for the lack of space. The window by the bed not only allows for better air circulation but also serves as a means of communication with other family members downstairs. It adds a touch of whimsy to the room, creating a sense of connection within the household.

The bathroom, on the other hand, embraces minimalism. It has been cleverly designed to accommodate all the necessities of a young family while maintaining a clean and uncluttered aesthetic. Every inch of space has been utilized efficiently, ensuring that nothing is wasted.

One surprising aspect of the apartment is the absence of overhead lights. The only exception is the chandelier above the dining table, which adds a touch of elegance to the space. Instead, the architects have incorporated lighting into the furniture, creating a seamless and integrated design. The light sources are hidden, and their intensity can be adjusted according to the time of day or night. This attention to detail in lighting design, often overlooked, has resulted in a pleasant and inviting atmosphere throughout the apartment. Regardless of the season or time of day, the ambiance is always just right.

The transformation of this apartment by Plus One Architects is truly remarkable. They have successfully combined the original charm of the early 20th-century building with
