A French family residing in the heart of Madrid‘s Justicia neighborhood has had their 151 sqm apartment transformed by the talented team at Gon Architects. Located on the top floor of a historic residential building from the early 20th century, this Spanish practice has breathed new life into the space, creating a stunning home near the bustling Gran Vía and vibrant Chueca district.
Gone are the days of a cramped and gloomy interior. The renovation has ushered in a brighter and more open space, where the exterior seamlessly merges with the interior. The result is an entirely new atmosphere, characterized by varying heights and shifting light, that connects every room in the house to the awe-inspiring Madrid sky. It’s as if stepping into this transformed abode transports you into a living Velázquez painting.
Inside the house, which sits gracefully beneath the expansive roof adorned with sloping planes, wooden beams, and skylights, the layout presents as a continuous space where boundaries between public and private areas are fluidly defined. The only discernible separations come in the form of flooring transitions from wood to ceramic tiles, signifying both function and spatial usage in each individual room.
The design of the home takes into consideration the different activities and interactions that occur on a daily basis. It is comprised of spacious rooms where both individual and collective actions of the household members take place.
One notable feature is the terrace, which spans 15 square meters and extends along the entire 21-meter length of the house. Alongside skylights, it serves as a direct source of natural light that illuminates the entire interior. The terrace not only provides a space for gatherings but also includes a jacuzzi that can be enjoyed throughout all seasons.
The furniture within the house reflects owners’ varied lives in different locations. It consists of objects collected from various sources, ranging from nineteenth-century chairs to twentieth-century classic designs and even pieces from IKEA.
