Barra Apartment: Paulo Martins’ Coastal Minimalism in Portugal

Minimalist design living room Barra Apartment Portugal Paulo Martins Arquitectura beige oak coastal sanctuary.

Ivo Tavares Studios

The Barra Apartment in Praia da Barra, Portugal, is the latest project from Paulo Martins Arquitectura e Design, offering a tranquil escape that reinterprets classic coastal living with a minimalist design approach. Located in a four-storey building facing the Atlantic coast, the residence transforms the original structure into a contemporary sanctuary deeply rooted in its seaside context. This isn’t just an apartment; it’s a meticulously crafted domestic experience designed to evoke serenity and functionality for clients with demanding lives, aiming to be a true sanctuary.

The principal living area unfolds as an open, fluid composition, seamlessly linking the living, dining, and kitchen spaces.

The interior space is a testament to thoughtful design that prioritizes natural materials and a subtle, sophisticated palette. The design team took inspiration from the sandy surroundings, using soft beige tones that envelop the oak floors and walls, creating a seamless, natural feel. Pale ceilings are used to great effect, amplifying the natural light and enhancing the sense of openness and airiness within the relatively compact 65 square meters gross area.

A key architectural element is the volume that houses the sanitary facilities. Clad in grey mirror, it stands as a sculptural form that brilliantly diffuses spatial boundaries through reflection. This strategic use of reflectivity extends the perception of the space, lending a lightness and continuity that is crucial in smaller apartments. It’s a clever technique that maintains the fluid composition while adding a touch of bold, reflective art to the minimalist setting.

A generous wardrobe offers comfort and privacy within the tranquil and self-contained sanctuary of the bedroom.

The principal living area exemplifies open-plan living, featuring a fluid connection between the living, dining, and kitchen zones. This configuration promotes flexibility and spatial coherence, resulting in an environment that feels elegant, inviting, and practical for everyday life. A laundry area is also discreetly integrated into the layout, demonstrating the studio’s focus on both aesthetic refinement and practical functionality.

The bedroom assumes the role of a tranquil and self-contained sanctuary, within an atmosphere of balance and harmony.

For the sleeping quarters, the bedroom is conceived as a self-contained sanctuary. Complete with an en-suite bathroom and a generous wardrobe, the space offers comfort, privacy, and an atmosphere of balance and harmony. The entire intervention is a quiet conversation between simplicity and sophistication, functionality and emotion, crafting a home that is in constant dialogue with the coastal landscape it overlooks.

The project features lighting and decoration from notable brands such as Santa&Cole (Cesta, Sylvestrina) and Davide Groppi (TeTaTeT). As Paulo Martins himself noted, their vision was to translate the “tranquil and timeless beauty of the beach into a livable, emotional space”. The Barra Apartment is a beautiful example of how architecture, as practiced by the Portugal-based studio, can not only solve spatial problems but also evoke positive emotions and elevate the occupant’s well-being. The final result is a bespoke living experience defined by a human-centric approach and meticulous attention to detail.
