Retro Revival: A Fusion of Eras in Kyiv Apartment

Modektura Studio recently completed a project that involved the renovation of an apartment to create a unique and harmonious living space. The apartment is situated in the heart of Kyiv, on Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street, within a residential building dating back to 1900, distinguished by its classical architecture featuring lofty ceilings.

During the initial project analysis phase, the team identified several visual distractions in the space, including wall niches, variations in floor height, and exposed utilities. To address these issues, the decision was made during the demolition stage to refurbish the flooring and reinforce windows and openings with a sleek metal frame.

Collaborating closely with the client, Modektura Studio decided to fuse classical elements with mid-century design pieces from the 1930s to the 1970s to create a distinctive aesthetic for the apartment. The team carefully selected vintage Cassina chairs, iconic Louis Poulsen, Flos, and Vibia lighting fixtures, as well as furniture from Porro and B&B Italia to seamlessly integrate them into the apartment’s ambiance. The result is a nostalgic retro atmosphere that exudes sophistication and elegance.

The incorporation of these design elements not only adds visual interest to the space but also creates a sense of warmth and character. The vintage furniture pieces serve as focal points within the apartment, inviting guests to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship of each item. Additionally, the lighting fixtures help to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, emphasizing the beauty of the carefully curated furniture and decor.

In order to foster a feeling of stability and serenity, a careful selection of materials was made, including toned oak, marble, stainless steel, and brass. Additionally, an experimental approach was taken by incorporating sand into the terrazzo flooring, while marble chips were embedded within mineral plaster on the walls, enhancing both their texture and visual appeal.

The design of the apartment seamlessly integrates with various forms of art, creating a harmonious interaction. Sculptures by Dmytro Hrek, a diptych by Rostyslav Zavhorodniy, and paintings by Kristina Otchych-Cherniak elegantly complement the interior, adding to its aesthetic depth.
