Spanin firm Gon Architects has just finished Casa Flix, a cozy 42m2 apartment situated on the sixth floor of a building in central Madrid. Dating back to 1900, this delightful residence is conveniently close to the lively Callao Square. Roberto, the owner, aimed to fully utilize the attic space and design a versatile, luminous, and inviting living space.
When Roberto first purchased the flat, it consisted of two rooms with sloping roofs in different directions. The challenge was to make the most of the limited space and unconventional layout. However, Gon Architects took a bold and creative approach to overcome these obstacles.
By removing unnecessary partitions, the architects created a seamless flow between the rooms, allowing for a sense of openness and versatility. Skylights and large windows were strategically incorporated to flood the space with natural light, dispelling any potential darkness often associated with attics. The use of light colors on the walls and ceilings further enhanced the perception of spaciousness.
Innovative storage solutions were introduced throughout the flat to maximize the limited square footage. Custom-made cabinets and shelves were installed underneath the sloping roofs, ensuring that every available inch was utilized. This thoughtful design kept clutter to a minimum, leaving the space open and uncluttered.
Flexibility was a key principle in the design of Casa Flix. The furniture pieces were carefully chosen to be easily transformable, adapting to different occasions and needs. Combined with the open layout, Roberto can utilize the space in various ways, making the most of his small yet stylish home.
Casa Flix is a testament to the power of creativity and ingenuity in architectural design. Through thoughtful planning and innovative solutions, this once-conventional attic has been transformed into a remarkable living space that defies its limitations. The unique character of the attic has been preserved, while simultaneously providing a modern and comfortable dwelling in the heart of Madrid.
As our perception of attics evolves, Casa Flix stands as a shining example of what can be achieved with vision and expertise. This remarkable transformation serves as an inspiration for architects, homeowners, and city dwellers alike, proving that even the most unconventional spaces can be transformed into remarkable and cherished homes.
