How to Make Your Home Look Larger

If you have a smaller home, it can be difficult to make it seem brighter and more spacious, especially if you have a lot of furniture. This could make your home feel more cramped and less inviting, which is why many people want to make their homes feel as large as possible.

If you’re hoping to sell your home, then it’s even more important for you to maximize your available space and make your home seem larger. First of all, you can ask your Compass real estate agent to recommend some solutions for making your home look bigger. Then, if you’re still looking for ideas, you can try out some of the tips listed below.

Declutter

Even if your home actually isn’t too small, you could be making it feel less spacious by having too much clutter. If there are too many objects and pieces of furniture in a room, then this can definitely make it feel more cramped as you’ll be reducing the amount of floor space and storage space you have. Therefore, the simple solution is to declutter each room by getting rid of things you don’t really need. Try out the KonMari method to see if this decluttering technique works for you!

Light walls

Another simple way to make your home seem larger is to go for a lighter wall color. Darker walls can make a room seem much smaller, so try painting your walls a lighter color to see if this makes your home feel more spacious. If you don’t want to go for pure white, you can also choose colors like light gray, blue, or cream. Another benefit of using light, neutral colors is that they’re more appealing to prospective buyers, so if you’re hoping to sell your home, repainting the walls is definitely a good idea.

Open plan

If these smaller changes aren’t working for you, then maybe you need to try something a bit more drastic. An open-plan living area may be the solution you’re looking for – knocking down the walls between your living room and the kitchen or dining room could give you the spacious feeling you’re looking for. With an open-plan layout, you can get rid of your small, cramped rooms and simply create one large living space. What’s more, open-plan layouts are still extremely popular, so this may increase your home’s value if you want to sell.

Natural light

Adding more natural light will also make your home seem larger and more spacious. Just as dark walls can make a room feel smaller, a dark room without much natural light will also feel rather cramped and claustrophobic. But how can you ensure that you get more natural light? The simple answer is to open all of the curtains and clean your windows regularly. Dirty windows will block a lot of light, and they certainly won’t enhance the appearance of your home either! You could also use mirrors to enhance the natural light in a room – placing a mirror opposite or perpendicular to the window will help bounce light around the room.
