The Dubrovska Studio was tasked with creating a yoga and barre studio exclusively for women in the heart of Kyiv. They successfully blended soft textures and curved shapes with tough surfaces and raw elements to capture the essence of feminine power, grace, and uniqueness.
Dubbed STAN (стан) in Ukrainian, which translates to physical state or posture, the studio’s simple interiors epitomize elegance and sophistication: enveloped in layers of delicate curtains and adorned with artistic features, the space’s minimalist design is complemented by a profound sense of spirituality that transforms the yoga studio into a haven for self-expression and overall well-being.
The design team addressed the stark, orthogonal layout by introducing a series of sheer curtains in slightly rounded tracks, resulting in an overlapping arrangement that softly enveloped both the reception and the adjacent classroom. These white curtains were skillfully paired with microcement flooring and concrete ceilings in shades of grey, creating an immersive environment. Within the reception area, a reception desk made of cast-in-concrete stood out with its jagged form and rugged textures, while a curvaceous sofa-bench provided a sculptural contrast.
Within the classroom, the clever utilization of translucent curtains effectively hides additional areas such as wash counters and storage shelves. Moreover, a versatile lighting arrangement further enhances the adaptability of the space. The team’s ingenuity shines through in the creation of unique wooden lockers, meticulously designed with personalized numbering and key tags. Additionally, the shower rooms adjacent to the classroom feature white mosaic tiling, drawing inspiration from the sleek and modern design of public bathrooms, thus contributing to the overall minimalist elegance of the project.
The architects faced challenges such as frequent power outages and limited resources while constructing the building during the ongoing war. They had to rely on local materials due to the impossibility of sourcing materials from abroad. Natalie Dubrovska, the founder and lead designer of the practice, mentioned that they had to piece the project together using leftovers found in Kyiv.
Each element of the project, from the custom-designed sofa to the sculptural side tables, has a unique story behind it, showcasing the team’s creativity and resourcefulness. This approach not only reflects Dubrovska Studio’s sustainability-focused ethos but also highlights the country’s resilience in the face of adversity.
